Although sporadic tree and other wind damage was observed across wide swaths of the surveyed area, the most concentrated area of damage began near US Rte 50 where a very large tree was downed onto a portion of a home near the intersection with Benton Road. This is approximately where the tornado likely first caused damage, with damage in these areas consistent with an EF0 tornado with winds of 80-85 MPH. Additional significant tree damage was observed farther to the south on the west side of Parkside Drive, where several patches of snapped trees were observed. It is possible the tornado briefly lifted farther to the south toward State Rte 132 as there was no discernible damage on either the north or south side of the road. However, farther to the south toward Bauer Road, additional tree damage was observed on each side of the road and along a portion of Peace Haven Lane. The tornado may have again briefly lifted toward Herold Road as no discernible damage was observed within the narrow rotation swath within this corridor. This being said, it is believed the tornado was again causing significant tree damage toward the south side of State Route 276 where numerous snapped and uprooted trees were observed on either side of Half Acre Road. The tree damage in this vicinity was concentrated and significant, suggesting 80-85 MPH winds once again. Additional tree and minor structural damage was observed on the southern and western fringe of the center of the narrow tornado track, including along Old State Route 32, and this damage was consistent with straight-line winds. No discernible significant tree or structural damage was observed south of Old State Route 32 and Half Acre Road, so it is believed the tornado had lifted as the storm progressed west and southwest of Williamsburg. Although sporadic tree and other wind damage was observed along large swaths of the surveyed area, it is believed the tornado first caused damage near the intersection of Monterey Road and Hutchinson Road. Several uprooted and snapped trees were observed along Monterey Road progressing southeast toward US Rte 50. Some minor roof shingle damage was also observed on a residence within this corridor. Farther to the south, it is believed the tornado tracked across US Rte 50 where additional snapped trees were observed near the intersection of US Rte 50 and Monterey Maple Grove Road. To the southeast, a roof was also completely removed from a large barn just south of Caudil East Road near the intersection of Clemons Road. Additional large tree damage was observed in this area as well. Some tree damage was observed near the intersection of Jackson Pike and State Route 133. Farther to the southeast, dozens of trees were uprooted or snapped along a portion of McKeever Pike near Schoolhouse Road. It is believed the tornado weakened and lifted farther to the southeast as the storm transitioned to producing large swaths of straight-line wind damage near the Clermont and Brown county line east of Williamsburg. This tornado began in the area of Thery Road and Upper Five Mile Road in Brown County, where some tree damage was observed. As the tornado moved southeast, a barn was significantly damaged on Dietrick Road, along with some additional tree damage. The tornado then entered Highland County, producing tree damage in various places along Beltz Road. A house on the east side of Beltz Road had some shingles removed. Near the end of the tornado's path, a stand of trees was snapped on Beltz Road just north of Waits Road. Scattered straight-line wind damage, generally damage to trees, was also observed around the edges of the track of the tornado. Rating: EF-1 Estimated Peak Wind: 97 mph Path Length /statute/: 0.36 miles Path Width /maximum/: 100 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: August 20 2026 Start Time: 647pm EDT Start Location: Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, NY Start Lat/Lon: 40.5877 / -73.7520 End Date: August 20 2026 End Time: 650pm EDT End Location: Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, NY End Lat/Lon: 40.5847 / -73.7457 The National Weather Service survey team in coordination with federal, state and local public safety officials confirmed an EF1 tornado producing a narrow swath of estimated wind gusts of 65 to 97 mph across the far western end of Atlantic Beach between 647pm and 650pm on August 20, 2026. These winds resulted in an approximately 0.36 miles long by 100 yard wide path of moderate to major damage to nearly 50 beach bungalows and storage units and adjacent decking and railing, as well as window damage to nearly 30 cars, and destruction of 30 yards of sand fencing. Based on ground and drone survey, radar data, eyewitness reports, and videos/photos received we are able to confirm that an eastward moving waterspout likely paralleled the far southeastern beachfront of the Rockaways (east of Beach 59th street) before moving east-southeast over the entrance of East Rockaway Inlet towards the far western shoreline of Atlantic Beach. The waterspout came onshore as a tornado near the parking lot on the north side of the Sun and Surf Beach Club around 647pm EDT. The tornado demolished a 30 yd length of sand fence to the northwest of the parking lot adjacent to East Rockaway Inlet, before shattering the rear and north facing windows of nearly 30 cars in the parking lot. East southeast winds were estimated between 70 and 80 mph in this area. The tornado then continued east southeast across the Sun and Surf beach club, with complete roof damage, partial to locally complete wall damage, and adjacent deck and railing damage to 25 to 30 beach bungalows. The greatest wind damage was noted on the south and west side of the bungalows on 3 easternmost rows of bungalows, consistent with a convergent wind towards the east southeastward moving tornado. This was the area of most severe damage, with winds in this area estimated to be 85 to 97 mph. Additional light to moderate cabana and storage unit damage was noted up to 200 ft to the northwest of this primary damage swath. The tornado likely continued southeast across the open beach front, before moving back over the water and dissipating by around 650pm. This motion was consistent with radar and webcam analysis.
