High pressure center to the north will promote light winds over the region this morning, particularly over northeastern South Dakota and western Minnesota. As the high pressure center progresses eastward today, wind direction will shift from northerly to become southerly to southeasterly. Afternoon gusts will reach up to 20 to 25 miles per hour, mainly along and west of the Missouri River. Afternoon humidity will remain above 40 percent today, which when combined with the mostly light to moderate winds, will keep Grassland Fire Danger at Low today. The only other fire weather concern today will be the chance for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The main threat area for these storms will be over north central and central South Dakota, and some of these storms may be severe. The main threats will be cloud to ground lightning and wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour in the strongest storms. Heavy rainfall and hail of 1 inch in diameter may also be potential threats.
