Updated at 636 PM CDT Sun Aug 23 2026 - A Heat Advisory is in effect for southeast Mississippi today for heat indices to around 108 degrees. - Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms can be expected each afternoon, particularly across the southern half of the area. Storms will be capable of producing gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. && .UPDATE... Issued at 1129 AM CDT Sun Aug 23 2026 Hot and humid conditions continue the rest of this afternoon across the area across southeast Mississippi as heat indices soar into the 105 to 110 range. Elsewhere, afternoon mixing is helping to limit higher dewpoints keeping it a bit more tolerable for heat stress. The same can be expected on Monday, although there are some uncertainties in regards to the overall evolution of showers and storms that precludes confidence in issuing a heat advisory at this time. With that said, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will likely occur across the area both this afternoon and Monday afternoon as several shortwaves track southeast across the area. Strong, potentially damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning can be expected with any storms. As we head throughout the rest of the week, we remain in a relatively similar pattern with upper troughing remaining in control across the eastern half of the U.S. and upper ridging located across the south-central into southwestern U.S. Tuesday through Friday. This will continue to favor weak shortwaves tracking across the area throughout the period, bringing scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms each afternoon to the forecast area. Similar to prior days, strong, locally damaging wind gusts are possible with any storms. The heat should relax with the increased coverage of storms, with heat indices likely remaining just below heat advisory criteria as we head through the rest of the week. Afternoon temperatures also drop somewhat with highs only in the lower to middle 90's as opposed to the upper 90's to near 100 we've been enduring. Scattered to numerous showers and storms should start to develop across the area by the late morning/early afternoon hours. Expect brief reductions in visibilities and ceilings in some of the heavier activity. A few strong to severe storms, capable of producing gusty/erratic winds cannot be ruled out. Light and variable winds tonight will become a light northwesterly to westerly flow by the mid to late morning hours.
