Extreme fire danger is possible for any new or existing fires across our southern plains today. Both Las Animas and Baca counties are likely to see southwest winds gusting 45 to 50 mph, and single digit relative humidity values today. The cold front surges back through after sunset, bringing gusty northerly winds to both counties by around 8 to 9 PM or so at the latest. The front will finally bring some relief from critical fire weather conditions, as cooler and moister conditions look to sit over the region for at least Tuesday and Wednesday. Over the high country and the San Luis Valley, 50 mph winds are expected. This will bring chances for blowing dust over the valley, and blowing snow to the mountains. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible through this afternoon as well, mainly north of highway 50, with chances for light rain across the mountain adjacent plains early this morning. We cool down but remain active for both Tuesday and Wednesday, with best chances for widespread wetting rains coming in Tuesday night into Wednesday. Afternoon smoke dispersions will be very good and excellent for most zones today, with good rates over the Pikes Peak region.
